MEDIEVAL & GOTHIC ROOMS

There are several rooms of note for the period leading up to the Renaissance. Hall 2 represents Giotto and the 13th century. Most of the artworks displayed in this room represent the influence of Byzantine art. The masterpieces on display in this room are three large "Maestà" altarpieces. Three masters of 13th-century painting did the Maestà: Duccio di Buoninsegna, Cimabue, and Giotto. The following noteworthy rooms would be Halls 5/6, displaying International Gothic artworks, dedicated to Lorenzo Monaco and his contemporaries. Here, we can see a refined style of painting known as “international or flamboyant gothic”. Hall 7 is dedicated to Gentile da Fabriano and his impressive work in the Gothic style. Interestingly, the best way to understand the above “international or flamboyant gothic” style would be to observe the "Adoration of the Magi" by Gentile da Fabriano in Hall 7.

RENAISSANCE ROOMS

Moving on to the Renaissance period, we arrive at Hall 8. This room is dedicated to Filippo Lippi, one of the protagonists of the early Renaissance. Filippo is one of the most influential figures of the period, even being the first master of Sandro Botticelli. His masterpieces, "The Coronation of the Virgin" and "Madonna with Child and Two Angels," are on display in Hall 8. Halls 10/14 are dedicated to Sandro Botticelli, who represents the essence of the Renaissance. His outstanding works, such as "The Birth of Venus" and "Primavera", can be seen here. Hall 15 shows the work of Leonardo da Vinci while under the tutelage of his master Verrocchio, even featuring paintings like the "Baptism of Christ" on which both painters worked. Then, Hall 35, dedicated to Michelangelo and the Florentines, features the final evolution from the High Renaissance to a period called Mannerism. Famously, in this room lies the only finished panel painting by Michelangelo: the "Doni Tondo". The remaining noteworthy rooms are ones dedicated to Raffaello, Titian of the Venetian school, and Caravaggio.
